An update on the Vainglory page today revealed a bit of news for version 2.0. The team wanted to make sure fans knew that the improve the experience and increase excitement. That’s where the new “Mystery Chest” comes in.
It’s tough to feel angry when a game is free to play over in app purchases. A company needs to make money somehow. While Dota 2 manages to do it all for free, not everyone has the resources of Valve. For the un-initiated Vainglory currently has four forms of currency, Glory, ICE, Essence, and Opals. ICE is up for purchase and can be used to buy skins, heroes, and chest keys. Glory can be used to buy heroes, and certain chests. Essence is used to craft cards, and Opals are only from Seasonal Chests, and used specifically for seasonal skins.
All this currency comes in at a trickle, and after opening ten seasonal chests I still only have around 35 Opal, and I REALLY want some of the seasonal skins!
The new Mystery Chest will hopefully fix some of that. The team talks about how the Seasonal chest didn’t feel “worth it” since the drop rate was so low. I’ll be the first one to admit that if there was a way to buy the seasonal skins directly I would! I mean just look at this skin for Fortress!
The Mystery Chest has a 1:3 chance of dropping a skin or new hero. There is also a very small chance of getting *lifts pinky to cheek* One-Million Opals! The other drops are as follows:
- Opals, Glory, Essence, boosts and Mystery Keys – These loot payouts are consistently greater than in the old Season Chest.
- If you don’t get a hero or skin, you’ll at the very least get 800 Glory or a boost or another Mystery Key
- If you would receive a duplicate hero or skin, you’ll instead get at least 20 Opals.
I really think this is setting a new tone for Vainglory. Once again the game is acting less like a mobile game and more like what you would expect from any other MOBA. I say good on them and keep it up!
