Play Like a God: Thoth


Welcome to Play Like a God! This is a series where we dive a little bit deeper into your favorite SMITE gods and explain how to play them. We don’t necessarily tell you what items to buy or what skills to level up first, but we lay a solid foundation for you to grow on. This week we will be looking at the newest god added to the roster, Thoth. Thoth is the Egyptian god of magic, science, and arbitration. He uses his skills on the battlefield to blow his enemies away.


Thoth’s Abilities

Passive: Dead Reckoning – After killing 30 enemies, Thoth gains a stack of 4 Magical Penetration. He unlocks a new stack every 4 levels, up to a maximum of 5 stacks at level 17.

1: Hieroglyphic Assault – He raises into the air, ignoring the Basic Attack Movement penalty and conjuring 3 Hieroglyphs. His next 3 Basic Attacks pass through Enemies and apply Ability Damage instead. If these attacks pass through the Glyph of Pain, their range is increased by 30.

2: Evade and Punish – Thoth dashes in the direction he is currently traveling. After dashing, for 5s his next basic attack instead fires a magical projectile at the target which slows and deals ability damage. If these attacks pass through the Glyph of Pain, Both the Dash and the Projectile’s range are increased by 30.

3: Glyph of Pain – From his book, he conjures forth a Hieroglyph in front of him. Thoth’s ability projectile passing through the glyph receive increased damage, and a range increase of 30. Thoth and allies Basic Attack projectiles receive a reduced damage bonus, but no range increase.

4: Final Judgement – He begins summoning pages from his book, up to a maximum of four. When all four have been summoned, he sends them forward damaging all Enemies in their path. Thoth may activate this ability again to fire the ability early, doing a reduced amount of damage based on the number of pages currently summoned.

Soar like an Ibex…?

Thoth immediately reminds us of another mage, Freya. They both have ranged auto-attack enhancing abilities and dish out plenty of damage. Where Freya has crowd control and mobility, Thoth has greater range and spike damage. Consequently Thoth feels more like a Mage and less like a Hunter. Due to his fast attack speed, he is able to prioritize normal mage items and less attack speed items like Freya would.

I love gods that have the ability to poke down the enemy line from afar. Thoth is no exception. This standard combo of Glyph of Pain into Hieroglyphic Assault (3 into 1), deals a devastating amount of damage in an area. You can use this combo to deal damage to an entire team even if there are Warriors in the way. It is also fantastic at farming stacks for items like Book of Thoth and his passive. Glyph of Pain is on an incredibly low cooldown and should be used to empower all your other attacks. His ultimate ability, Final Judgement, takes a few seconds to channel, but his extremely far for a huge amount of damage. This attack will go through structures and jungle. Use this to your advantage when ganking enemies.

Into the Arena

In this game I take advantage of his ability to farm minions to buy multiple “stack” items like Doom Orb and Book of Thoth. I am able to quickly farm up stacks and maintain them. I had a lot of trouble learning how to use Final Judgement, but by the end of the game you can see some impressive snipes. Hope you enjoy!
