Introduction to Paragon Heroes

Paragon Heroes

MoreMOBA is going to start streaming Paragon every Thursday starting this week. In celebration of this, we’re looking to do flesh out some more Paragon content for those who are transitioning from another MOBA to Paragon. Today, we’re going to be looking at a general overview of the Paragon heroes and which heroes/champions/gods from other MOBA’s they best compare to. Sometimes there are obvious comparisons between two characters, but other times there aren’t direct analogs in other MOBA’s so we’re going to offer a short description justifying how they match in terms of design.

If you ever asked the question, “I’m new to Paragon, which character should I try first?”, this article is for you.

If you like the Heroes/Champions/Gods whose names appear in bold, we absolutely recommend the Paragon hero they are listed under. If you are fond the play style of the Heroes/Champions/Gods whose names appear in italics, you may like the Paragon hero they are listed under. Heroes/Champions/Gods with names that appear in italics may be similar in abilities, gameplay style, or appeal to the same player psychologically and we’ll explain that in the description.

Heroes of the Storm: Tyrande, Uther, Rehgar, Tassadar

Dekker is characterized as a support character with plenty of crowd control. Dekker has a stun, slow, and “ring” effect hat boxes enemies and allies in an area. Players that enjoy Dekker play to support their team, but still want to outsmart their opponents. Players that enjoy Dekker will actively want to find opportunities to initiate skirmishes and teamfights. Unlike other passive supports, Dekker wants to be in the fray and put your opponents in bad positions.

Feng Mao

League of Legends: Udyr, Jax, Irelia, Olaf, Dr. Mundo

DotA 2: Ursa, Axe, Bristleback

SMITE: Belona, Xin Tian, Amaterasu

Heroes of the Storm: Sonya, Illidan, Greymane

Feng Mao is an incredible sticky melee bruiser. Feng Mao gains offensive power when enemies hit him while his shield is up and gains defensive power when he hits with his offensive abilities. Players that enjoy Feng Mao love to fight. Feng Mao is possibly the best duelist and offensive ganker in the game. Players that like to roam around the map and pick off enemies that are in a bad map position should pick up Feng Mao.

The Fey

The Fey

League of Legends: Zarya, Lissandra, Taliyah, Swain

DotA 2: Treant Protector, Venomancer, Disruptor, Shadow Demon

SMITE: Sylvanus, Vulcan, Isis, Terra

Heroes of the Storm: Tyrande, Jaina, Gazlowe, Lunara

The Fey uses nature magic to damage her enemies and defend her allies. She’s deceptively strong and disruptive. Using her multitude of area of effect abilities, she can control the outcome of a fight by controlling enemy movements. While there are a lot of similarities between Gadget and The Fey, the differences come down to control. The Fey has the ability to slow, root, and tether enemies to a point. Players that enjoy The Fey like to be flexible. They bend to the needs of the team and can provide damage or support, whichever is needed. They enjoy outsmarting their enemies and setting up pivotal team fights for their team.

League of Legends: Viktor, Vel’Koz, Ziggs, Malzahar, Aurelion Sol, Swain, Anivia, Zilean

DotA 2: Tinker, Luna, Pugna

SMITE: Ah Puch, Nox, Poseidon, Zeus, Zhong Kui

Heroes of the Storm: Jaina, Kael’thas, Lunara

Gadget is the epitome of a zone-control caster. Gadget does not have any hard crowd-control, but she has enough slows and damage to control the flow of a fight. When she puts down her AoE abilities, enemies will have to make the tough decision to either fight or walk away and fight another day. Players that enjoy Gadget will like to play this mind-game with enemies. They will like to poke enemies slowly and whittle them down, ultimately asking the question – Do you want to die or walk away and let me take down this tower?

League of Legends: Morgana, Lissandra, Kennen, Orianna, Ahri, Annie

DotA 2: Outworld Devourer, Lesherac, Storm Spirit, Warlock

SMITE: Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, Nox, Sol

Heroes of the Storm: Jaina, Falstad, E.T.C., Thrall

Gideon is the closest to a traditional mage character in Paragon. Gideon does a lot of area damage and has a teleport to help him get away from dangerous situations. What differentiates Gideon from the other mages in the game is his ultimate. He has one of the strongest initiation ultimates in the game, allowing him to both pick a fight with enemies out of position and to control the enemy team. Players who choose Gideon accept the responsibility of having a game-changing ultimate. Players that enjoy Gideon don’t necessarily like to sling spells in the back line, but like to jump into the frontline with a well-timed Black Hole.

League of Legends- Garen, Sion, Aatrox, Yorick

Dota 2- Wraith King, Bristleback, Axe, Faceless Void

Smite- Kumbhakarna, Tyr, Odin, Ares

Heroes of the Storm- E.T.C., Tyrael, Diablo, Muradin, Johanna

Greystone is a melee fighter who never backs down from a challenge. An incredibly durable, skilled swordsman, Greystone takes the fight to his enemies and is capable of fighting even when his enemies can’t. His ultimate is the trick up his sleeve, allowing him to ressurect from death with a percentage of his maximum health every few minutes.  A Greystone player likes to battle with the enemy. He wants to be his team’s frontline and be the first and last person in a fight. Supporting your team is just as important as battling to a Greystone main.

League of Legends- Sivir, Jhin, Caitlyn, Urgot

Dota 2- Windranger, Sniper, Luna, Templar Assassin

Smite- Neith, Chiron, Artemis

Heroes of the Storm- Falstad, Raynor, Chromie

Grim.exe is creepy cool fairy machine hybrid thing. He uses his spells to outsmart the enemy ranged damage carry to win the lane and game. Grim.exe has the ability to completely negate an enemy spell and gain mana back from shielding it. This allows him to absorb your enemies strongest skill and use the mana to bring the pain. With his ability to slow enemies on hit and have long range ultimate that pierces terrain, he is the master of catching players out of position and punishing them. Grim.exe players like to bring the damage and carry their team to victory, but also like the pleasure of knowing you outsmarted them. They like to play the unconventional damage dealers and like to blend their casters and attack damage carries.

League of Legends: Master Yi, Xin Zhao, Sion Rengar, Talon

DotA 2: Choas Knight, Centaur Warruner, Clockwerk, Ursa

SMITE: Ravana, Hercules, Loki

Heroes of the Storm: The Butcher, Thrall, Illidan, Greymane

Grux is a high-octane melee fighter that wants to jump into a fight and destroy a target. Grux has a charge, an area pull towards him, and a melee ranged stun to help him accomplish his goals. Grux has no way out of a fight if he decides to charge into combat. Grux players truly shine in their combat prowess and their decision-making. Players who enjoy Grux want to pick fights with enemies and love that rewarding feeling when they eliminate a key target. Grux is an all-in fighter with tons of damage but few defensive abilities, and players who do well with Grux will need to compensate for that.

League of Legends: Gragas,  Karma, Caitlyn, Nidalee, Rumble

DotA 2: Gyrocopter, Ancient Apparition

SMITE: Vulcan, Ra, Janus, Kukulkan, Agni, Scylla

Heroes of the Storm: Lunara, Sgt. Hammer, Li-Ming, Tychus, Nova

Howitzer uses his missiles and cannons to poke away enemy health at range. As a ranged caster, Howitzer utilities his skills to deal damage from a safe distance away. Because all of his attacks hit in an area, aiming is less important and positioning is more important. Players who enjoy Howitzer like to deal massive amounts of damage safely from range. They like reveling in the frustrations of others as they get pelted down and cannot safely reach you.

Iggy & Scorch

League of Legends: Teemo, Heimerdinger, Sivir, Singed

DotA 2: Techies, Venomancer, Dark Seer, Lycan, Nature’s Prophet

SMITE: Ratatoskr, Vulcan, Cupid, Jing Wei, Kukulkan

Heroes of the Storm: Murky, Gazlowe, Sylvanas, The Lost Vikings

Our favorite creepycute hero, Iggy & Scorch use turrets and fire to melt away their enemies. Despite their size, Iggy & Scorch are deceptively powerful. They grant themselves movement speed while slowing enemy heroes in flaming oil slicks, allowing them to pester and infuriate the enemy team. To add to their ability to annoy, Iggy & Scorch are amazing pushers. Players who enjoy Iggy & Scorch love to pick apart the enemy team by drawing attention to themselves. By no means are Iggy & Scorch tanks, but there is a phenomenon where people will chase you down because of how small and rage-inducing your character is and end up killing themselves. Iggy & Scorch players love to play with other’s emotions.

League of Legends: Nocturne, Shaco, Talon, Zed, Twitch

DotA 2: Nyx Assassin, Riki, Bounty Hunter, Ember Spirit

SMITE: Loki, Bastet, Ao Kuang, Thanatos

Heroes of the Storm: Zeratul, Illidan, Kerrigan, Greymane

Kallari fits the traditional rogue archetype. She stealths and has incredible burst damage. Players who enjoy Kallari also enjoy the idea of being a stealth assassin. These players understand that while they do not have the highest health or the highest sustain in the game, they have the element of surprise. Kallari has a new ultimate now and is able to attack any enemy on the map at global range and teleport to them! Kallari players are ones that absolutely love high risk, high reward gameplay.

League of Legends- Irelia, Olaf, Master Yi, Zed

Dota 2- Juggernaut, Anti-Mage, Lifestealer, Tiny, Ursa

Smite- Ne Zha, Fenrir, Kali, Loki

Heroes of the Storm- Illidan, Greymane, Kerrigan

If you want a brutal and fast melee assassin, come no further than Khaimera. Khaimera gains health regeneration whenever he hits an enemy, which makes him a powerful duelist. The longer the fight goes, the more powerful he becomes. Players that enjoy Khaimera want to carry the game trough decisive melee combat. With the ability to increase your attack speed on demand and sustain with high damage, you can pull off amazing plays. Be your team’s all-star, be Khaimera.

League of Legends: Caitlyn, Jhin, Jinx, Lux, Teemo

DotA 2: Templar Assassin, Jakiro, Sniper

SMITE: Neith, Rama, Chiron, Ah Muzen Cab, Medusa

Heroes of the Storm: Raynor, Tychus, Falstad, Valla

Murdock is a ranged auto-attack hero that packs a punch. Murdock fulfills a hunter/trapper archetype. He has the ability to lay down traps that damage and slow enemies that run over them. He also has a massive ranged snipe ability that can bring down any foe looking to run away. Murdock is not the fastest or most agile hero, so players will have to think ahead of time and make sure they are in the right position. Players that enjoy Murdock will be planners. They want that “Gotcha!” moment when the enemy is forced to step on a trap because it’s the lesser of two evils or nail them with a well-planned Devastating Blast.

League of Legends: Soraka, Janna,  Shen, Sona, Nami

DotA 2: Treant Protector, Io (Wisp),

SMITE: Athena, Aphrodite, Sylvanus

Heroes of the Storm: Brightwing, Tassadar, Lt. Morales, Malfurion

The other support in the game for now is Muriel. Muriel is more of your classic healer and has the ability to push out plenty of shields to protect her allies in a fight. Muriel also has a trick up her sleeve with her ultimate, which allows her to spread her wings and fly to any ally on the map and grant them a massive shield. Unlike Dekker players, players that enjoy Muriel want to stay in the backline and protect their team. The best offense is a good defense. Muriel truly shines when she is surrounded by her allies.

League of Legends: Gnar, Trundle, Renekton, Nasus, Singed

DotA 2: Wraith King, Dragon Knight

SMITE: Bacchus, Tyr, Chaac, Fenrir, Hun Batz

Heroes of the Storm: Diablo, Muradin, Sonya,  Artanis, Johanna

Rampage is a tank whose idea of protecting his team is being in the fray, disorienting as many enemies as possible. With a ranged stun and the ability to leap back and forth, Rampage suits his name well. When enemies think they finally have the upper hand, Rampage can use his ultimate to become monstrous and heal. Players that enjoy Rampage want to use his skills to bully his enemies. Blocking and damage reduction are beneath Rampage; players who want raw, visceral combat and the ability to soak insane amounts of damage, Rampage is for you.

League of Legends: Blitzcrank, Thresh, Nautilis

Dota 2: Pudge, Vengeful Spirit

SMITE: Sylvanus, Ymir, Sobek

Heroes of the Storm: Stitches, Dehaka, Butcher

Its all about the hook. Give a tank a way to pull an enemy close and then deal some damage and you have yourself the very standard, very necessary role that Riktor fills. You can find one in every game, and for good reason, they are a staple of the genre, and no MOBA is complete without one! Players that love Riktor like to outsmart their enemies and revel in knowing you put them in a bad situation. You want to pick apart your enemy team and eliminate them one at a time. You never listened to your mother when she told you to not play with your food.

League of Legends: Cho’gath,  Nasus, Sion, Kindred

DotA 2: Slardar, Legion Commander

SMITE: Hercules, Sobek, Serqet, Mercury

Heroes of the Storm: Diablo, Dehaka, Stitches, Leoric

Sevarog’s mantra is “slow and steady wins the race”. Sevarog grows more and more powerful (and gets bigger and bigger pauldrons) the more souls he can reap for enemy minions. While he farms and grows stronger, Sevarog is a great tank, ganker, and initiator for his team. He has a root, slow, and massive knockback to contribute in a teamfight. Players that enjoy Sevarog are patient and like to manage their time effectively. There is a fine balance to farming the jungle for souls or helping an ally in lane. Sevarog players are team players as well, knowing that they are going to be integral to helping others set up kills.

League of Legends: Ashe, Varus, Graves

DotA 2: Drow Ranger, Clinkz, Medusa

SMITE: Artemis, Skadi, Cupid, Rama

Heroes of the Storm: Lunara, Tychus, Raynor, Zagara

With a bow and arrow, Sparrow lines up slow but powerful attacks to defeat her enemies. What Sparrow lacks in mobility, she gains in attack damage and attack range. Because of her lack of escape abilities, positioning is key to her ability to stay alive in fights. Players who enjoy Sparrow are willing to sacrifice mobility in the moment for raw damage. To compensate for her shortcomings, Sparrow players tend to me more calm and calculated. They will need to plan where and how to attack in a teamfight as the beginning of it unfolds. Sparrow is much worse at positioning and transitioning on the fly unlike Twinblast (see him below).

League of Legends: Braum, Alistar, Malphite, Yasuo, Anivia

DotA 2: Earth Spirit, Elder Titan, Earthshaker

SMITE: Ymir, Cabrakan, Geb

Heroes of the Storm: Leoric, Anub’arak, Tyrael, Tassadar, E.T.C.

Steel uses a massive shields to mitigate incoming damage to his team and even block projectiles! Steel is an effective ganker and initiator in this game due to his multiple stuns and knockbacks. No matter what MOBA you’re coming from, you know that attack damage ranged auto-attack “carry” heroes are the most important damage dealers in the late game. Steel completely counters them by erecting a massive wall that blocks all incoming projectiles for his team.  Players that enjoy Steel want the ability to protect their team while outsmarting the enemy team with well-timed knockbacks and walls. Being a good tactician and knowing how fights will unfold are important to Steel as he needs to position his wall in the right direction for his team.

League of Legends: Vayne, Lucian, Jinx

DotA 2: Morphling, Weaver, Queen of Pain

SMITE: Apollo, Ullr, Xbalanque, Ne Zha, Sol

Heroes of the Storm: Tracer, Valla, Li-Ming

Using both his pistols, Twinblast is a fast-moving and fast attacking ranged damaged dealer. Coupled with a dash and movement speed buff, Twinblast can juke around enemies while dealing damage. Where other heroes have to position well from the start of a fight, Twinblast is a little more forgiving due to his mobility. Players who enjoy Twinblast like fast-paced combat and may have a strong background in other shooters. Twinblast players enjoy the flow of combat and ride that wave well. Let the planning be done by other players, there’s better lessons learned on the fly.
